First…my story. I’m going to be honest here. I was always a Weight Watchers girl. When I was younger I had no trouble keeping slim and lean. When I had two children in my early thirties I went to Weight Watchers to get rid of the residual 30 lbs that had accumulated around my middle and everywhere else. Nine months on the program, no problem. Kept the weight off for a couple of years. But in my 40′s something changed. I was getting thick around the middle. You know, the dreaded bulge that hangs over the top of your jeans (even low-rise, no “mom” jeans here). How to get rid of that muffin top? Nothing I tried seemed to work. “Counting points” like I used to was having no effect. I took up cycling. Within one year of buying a bike I was competing in rides of up to 60 miles long! So I knew it wasn’t lack of exercise that was the problem. I tried fad diets, ridiculous “ab toner” machines from TV commercials and became pretty obsessed with the quickest way to lose belly fat. Nothing was working :(   I was getting increasingly self conscious for my boyfriend to see me in my lingerie and I was so frustrated that clothes that otherwise fit really well were just too tight around the waist. Even worse, I was starting to hear more and more through the media (thanks Dr. Oz!) that the waist is one of the most unhealthy places to carry fat. By the time both my brother and my mother were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes I was determined to get rid of my muffin top for good.

I am too embarrassed to list all the fad diets tried. But I will tell that you I started researching on the internet like crazy. Consistently the name that came coming up in articles that I read was that of Mike Geary. Mike is a Certified Nutrition Specialist and a Certified Personal Trainer specializing in body fat reduction strategies and functional strength and power training. He publishes an on line fitness ezine that has almost a million subscribers and wrote the highly popular Truth About Abs book. At first I was skeptical about trying his system. It was affordable and had an awesome money back guarantee (don’t get that at Barnes and Noble!) but I was so jaded by all the junk I had read on the internet. But after I watched his video on how so called “diet food” is keeping us fat and I read testimonials of his customers, I decided to give his book a try. I am so glad I did.

Here are some of the highlights of The Truth About Abs that really made a difference for me:

  • In a straight forward but scientifically sound way it took the confusion and mystery out of “healthy eating”
  • It provided real, sustainable tips for muscle building and fat loss
  • It provided unconventional work out ideas that required no special equipment, didn’t take a lot of time but that totally delivered results
  • It provided easy and delicious recipes to produce and maintain a lean body
  • Mike’s free follow up e-mail series provided continuing education and motivation and fresh ideas to keep me on track
Most importantly, did it work?

Well, within 4 weeks on the Truth About Abs program my pants were zipping up a whole lot easier! I lost 4 inches around my waist and, for the first time in my life, could start to see some muscle definition in my mid section. Let me be honest and tell you that the lovely stomach you see in the website header here is not my stomach (I’ve had 2 children and not even this program can magically erase stretch marks!) but after 6 months on the program I feel as toned and confident and sexy as if it were. I have a much improved and consistent energy level and feel that I have invested wisely in the health of my body.

As an added bonus my boyfriend was so impressed with my results that he tried the program. He had a little middle age spread going on there for a while, ad while I don’t think he’ll ever be a ripped super model, he is looking a whole lot slimmer, sexier and is much more confident in general. We have both had a lot of fun updating our wardrobes. Who doesn’t enjoy hearing compliments?

Carrying weight around your middle is not only unattractive, it’s also very unhealthy. So what is the best way to burn belly fat?

Unfortunately there are no “quick fixes” or magic bullets when it comes to burning belly fat. Forget any of the following:

  • diet pills, supplements, teas (they are bogus and some are dangerous)
  • fad diets (a fad diet is any diet that you couldn’t stay om for the rest of your life. Seriously, do you really think it’s a good idea to avoid fruit or carbs for the rest of your life?Even if you could do it.)
  • any piece of exercise equipment that you see on an infomercial

Be honest with yourself. How long did it take you to accumulate extra belly fat? Probably years. So to think that you can get rid of your muffin top in a month is probably unrealistic. What does work if you really want to burn belly fat is to stick to a sensible 3 pronged approach. Not only will you burn belly fat, you will most likely feel healthier overall with a more consistent energy level and mood (no more sugar crashes and food cravings). Trust me, your body, your family and your doctor will all be happier in the long run :)

Here’s the 3 pronged approach:

1. You are what you eat! Period. Now you probably know that if you eat Twinkies and french fries you will look and feel awful. But did you know that much of what the multi-billion “diet” industry promotes as “low fat” foods, meal bars and diet shakes are equally bad for you?

2. Burn fat in general. There is no way just to burn belly fat. The only way to burn fat is to do fat burning exercise that increases your metabolism. Any type of exercise will do, as long as it gets your heart pumping. Burning body fat isn’t rocket science. You need to burn more calories than you consume, that’s it. It’s hard to burn calories watching TV or watching YouTube (unless it’s an exercise video and you join in!) You need to increase your exercise. That means that if you do none right now, walking half an hour a day will be amazing for your health and fat loss efforts. If you are already pretty fit then you need to trick your metabolism into gearing up. If you have been doing the same exercise for a while your body has gotten used to it. Try something new and fun (take a dance class, watch a Zumba video) or if you are pressed for time most experts agree that you will get the best results from interval training.

3. Focus on a few exercise that tone your core muscles (your tummy). Do not use any gimmick machines or think that you need to do 100 crunches a day. A few simple tummy toning exercise, like leg lifts etc. (there are some on this site) will work. The trick is that if you just bulk up your stomach muscles without losing the fat around them then you will end up looking bigger :(

One of the biggest mistakes I made when trying to lose weight was buying “low fat” and other supposedly “healthy” diet foods. I was so shocked when I found out the truth that several of these foods were actually foods that not only didn’t help me lose weight, but helped my body HOLD ON to the fat. Urg! It’s so frustrating with all the misinformation out there. I was eating the wrong foods for so long that not only did they take a toll on my muffin top, they also took a toll on my health. Although I am very physically active (I compete in bike races up to 100K long!) I have had 2 emergency surgeries in the last 4 years. The first was to remove my appendix. The second was to remove my gall bladder. I am convinced that eating processed food that my body didn’t know how to cope with was at the root of these two health issues.

Millions of Americans suffer from diabetes, as we know. Consuming huge amounts of sugar that they are unaware of, is a huge contributor to this problem. What do I mean “that they are unaware of”? Of course, you know when you are eating a donut or drinking a Coke that you are consuming sugar. What about if you are being “healthy” and having orange juice and wheat toast fro breakfast? Did you know that your body converts those two items into as much sugar as the donut? Your liver has to work just as hard to help your body process them? It’s shocking, I know. And I am not making it up.

Clearly the solution is to eat foods that help you BURN fat, not store it. The good news is that there are tons of great foods that help you burn fat. They are delicious, easy to find and plentiful enough that you never have to feel that you are stuck on a “fad” diet.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when looking at the best exercises to get rid of muffin top is to dive straight into sit ups, crunches and any other exercise geared specifically for your abs. Doing hundreds of sit ups alone or investing in any of those silly ab machines you see on infomercials will is not an effective way to lose belly fat. And here’s why. Your abdominal muscles lie under a layer of fat. If you have love handles or a muffin top, then it’s a pretty thick layer of fat. If you simply “bulk up” the abdominal muscles you are just going to push that layer of fat further out. You are going to look even fatter! The most effective muffin top exercises then are the ones that help you lose the layer of fat.

This is great news!

There are lost of fun ways to burn fat. You do not need to go buy expensive equipment or gym memberships. Any form of exercise or activity that gets your heart rate increased is going to help you lose fat. So find something that you enjoy – walking, cycling, swimming, running, try that new Zumba class, whatever. The important concept to understand is that fat burning is the first step to help you lose your tummy fat. Once you have lost some of the fat, through diet and cardio fat burning exercise, then it’s time to start focusing on exercises that will help you tone your abdominal muscles.

This is an easy and excellent muffin top exercise that you can do in just one minute!
